Kelton, the First Name

I have a 6-year-old son named Kelton. I named him after the most WONDERFUL Texas history teacher ever to teach the subject in my opinion. I was in Mr. Kelton Kupper's class the last year that he taught at Northwest Middle School in Justin,Texas, and he made such a lasting impression on me that when I became pregnant I knew that I wanted to name the baby Kelton if it was a boy. He was not only an inspiration to me but to a lot of the other students as well, including my sister who had him 10 years prior to me being in his class.

    Tiffany from Rhome, Texas

I found the name Kelton in the Stephen King book Needful Things about five years before my son was born. I liked it and decided that if I ever had a son I would name him Kelton. It was a good choice because he really likes the fact that there are no other ones around.

At my dad's old job, everyone called him by our last name: Kelton. One day, a co-worker (who, apparently, didn't know my dad's first name) came up to him and told Dad he had mentioned his name to his wife, who at the time was 7 months pregnant. She liked the name so much they ended up naming their son Kelton!

--April Kelton

Was just reading your website and thought I would tell you a little about my 'Kelton' He is 5 yrs old and lives in Arizona. We named him Kelton as a form of our names put together -- had never heard of it before but it sounded good. K is the first letter of my name Kerri and 'elton' is part of his dad's name being Shelton. Hence the name Kelton.

So that's our Kelton story and we beleive it's a GREAT name!! We get a lot of compliments on it! And know he is going to be a very strong man with such a strong name!

    --Kerri Hageman

My father was named Kelton after his grandmother's family. It was shortened, however, to Kelly, which he was always called. I guess he was only called Kelton when he was in trouble!

    --Kathy Jordan

"I was named after the Kelton community in Wheeler County, Texas. My mother grew up in the panhandle of Texas and fora period of time her family lived in Wheeler County. Mom liked the name, but you can see that it was a second choice because she really wanted to name me Richard (thus the R.that I never used until the Army forced me to use first name, middle initial, last name).

"She intended that I be called Dick. I was saved from such a fate by a babysitter that started calling me "Dickie" and my mom could not stand that and she started calling me by my middle name KELTON.

"Until I was probably at least half grown, I did not even know of another person named Kelton except for a one taxidermist in Fort Worth named Kelton S. Tilly. Later I met Jane Mathis, and she married a fellow with the last name Kelton. When I was in high school, I found a Kelton Richard Conner in the annual for Arlington State College. He transferred toTexas Tech and died of exposure on a geology outing but, you would not believe how many calls my folks got thinking it was me.

"As I see more and more people with the name Kelton I feel less and less alone, but in my 53 years I have only met one person from the Kelton community for which I was named . . . and they didn't know the origin of the name. Keep up the good work on the name."

    --R. Kelton Conner

"My folks have told me that they knew someone named Kelton. It seems to be a little twisted, in that apparently what they really wanted was the nickname Kim, and this other Kelton was apparently called Kim for short. So I was named Kelton on that basis, but when I was 6 months old my grandmother talked sense into them and they started calling me Kelly instead, to my eternal gratitude (grin) I have gone by Kelton ever since I went to college anyway, so it's all moot!"

"My name was the result of an English master's (mom) who likes language & sounds. She picked the second syllable first (ton), she wanted a clinton or a kelvin or something along those lines. Lying in bed with dad, she ran syllables by him as he dozed off. Kelton was a random combination she liked. She had never heard it before, and prided herself on giving me a totally 'unique' name.

"Since then I have seen the name three places (yours being #4): on a few road signs, the last name of a real estate developer, and the brand name of a cheap watch sold in France. (Too cheap for me to buy one.)"

"My mother says she and my dad just thought of it about two weeks before I was born. Kelton is my first name, as you can tell. Well, I just wanted to add that there is a Kelton St. in Houston which is my hometown."

"My father was a high school state tennis champ. I am named after his high school tennis coach 'Kelton Brewer'."

"My great uncle was named Kelton B. George, who died in WWII. I was told that my great grandparents loved a town in Tennessee named Kelton and that is how he got his name.

"I must admit the name was a curse as a child because people thought it was weird, and the names to make fun of me stemmed from Kelton -- Smeltone, Skelton, etc., but as an adult it has been great. It is an ice breaker for meeting new people. If I wanted to go by my first name I could, kinda' like Madonna.

"I have always been very proud of my name, but could never seem to find it on button or keychain racks :) Your site simply confirms that Keltons are special people with a name that binds.

      --Kelton Davis

I think Mamma George named Uncle Kelton after her best friend when she was growing up. Granny said she thought it was either the family name or the name of the town in which they lived, and believed it was in Missouri, but said it could have been in Tennessee.

      --Kelton Davis' father

"My name is Kelton Eagle Anderson and I am 9 months old. My mother and father almost named me Jeremy but really wanted a stronger sounding name. As my dad says 'a name that sounds like it comes with a good strong handshake'. My Mother says it means 'soldier-warrior of God' and that it is a good name for a future President of the United States. We'll see about that in time. My middle name is the same as my father's, Alan Eagle Anderson, and as my grandfather's, Jo Eagle Anderson. It was the maiden name of my great grandmother, Vivian Eagle, who gave it to my granddad as a way to keep the family name alive. She had only one sister and no brothers." [02-96]

Lots of children in Corsicana, Texas, were brought into the world by the father and son doctors each named, Dr. Leslie Eugene Kelton, for several decades through the middle of this century. And many of these children's parents gave them "Kelton" as their first or middle name after the doctor who delivered them.

One example is Kelton Kupper: "I was named after a doctor who my grandparents and parents had a deep respect for." His family were from Purdon near Corsicana and named him for Dr. Kelton in Corsicana. You can read about his home town in a column entitled, "Living in rural Texas in the 40s," in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram online.

Kelton by Choice

"My father and his brothers found the name "Kelton" in the phone book in Gadsden, Alabama, right after WWII. They liked it so well, they all officially changed their names within a year or two of one another. They learned only later that someone named Kelton had been a notorious criminal only a half a generation earlier.

"I'd be interested in knowing more about the 'real' Kelton family. Thanks."

"Actually, my family and I have no connection to the Kelton family. My parents changed their name years ago, and I am the first generation born under the name.

"My father was tired of discrimination based on his last name. Therefore, he decided to leave behind an ethnic name and assume a new name that reflected no particular religion or ethnicity. Kelton was chosen as it was plain, had no stereotype and was not very common. In a sense, he was leaving behind the old world problems and grudges, and starting a new family line with an American ethnicity to match our melting pot looks, views, and traditions. I guess it was my father's contribution to the end of racism."
    (as told by younger brother)

"I'm not actually a Kelton. My family changed its name to Kelton when I was about two years old. My mother said that we had changed our name to be closer to the middle of the alphabet and not always last in line when things were done alphabetically."
    (as told by older brother)

"My name is Keltonic. I'm doing a little research on family history and know of a few relatives along the way that dropped the 'ic' from the end of their name to become 'Kelton'."

Kelton House Museum and Garden

The Charlotte Gelston Needlework Competition was sponsored by the Kelton House Museum and Garden, operated by the Junior League of Columbus at 586 East Town Street in Columbus, Ohio 43215. The first contest in 1995 sought needlework "that reflects the techniques and styles of the mid to late 19th century American European Victorian era". The house, built in 1852, was the home of Fernando and Sophia Kelton. He was a prominent businessman in Columbus. See their Family Register.

Kelton Toy Company

My name is Kelk not Kelton, but there was a company in my family named KELTON, which was a toy manufacturing company in Toronto, Canada. I believe it was founded by Norman Kelk, and among other things, made two plastic toys that were well-known.

One was a projector which one would put on top of a picture and it would project it on the wall -- this was great for kids to copy pictures. The other was a screen that had two knobs which allowed you to control a stylus, which drew lines on the screen -- it could be erased by turning it upside down.

    From the newsgroup: rec.pets.dogs.misc

    Subject: Re: Dog Names

    Date: 6 Nov 1995 13:25:33 -0500

We always name our dogs after Disney characters.
Male names are "Raja" - tiger in Aladdin
    "Simba" - Lion King
    "Miko" - Pocohontas
"Copper" - fox and the hound
We have also had "Sandy" - Annie
and "Dillon", "Kelton", "Laddie", and our oldest mutt is "Yeller"

[Author's Note: I had a dog named "Laddie" as a child, but not "Kelton."]

Kelton's Reel

"Regarding the origin of Kelton's Reel, Adam Granger was not able to say how this particular tune got that name, but he did say that this is one of 20 names for a song listed in his book under the name 'Wild Horses.' It is one of the oldest and most commonly played tunes in the book."

Kelton, the Computer

"Here's the funny thing: The Kelton referred to is not actually a person, but our computer! We named it Kelton because we live on Kelton St. in Allston, Massachusetts . . . and for some odd reason we have registered ourselves in several places under the eroneous name Edward J. Kelton! Imagine my surprise when we recieved mail from Ed Kelton! Anyway, while I can't help you in any direct way to connect to any of your actual family . . . I am curious who my street is named after . . .is it perhaps a relative of yours?"
