James Kelton of Chester County, Pennsylvania, was believed to be a descendant of Thomas Kelton of Montrose, a Scottish town on the North Sea about 50 miles northeast of Edinburgh, according to a 1925 book of American genealogy.[1] This account says James was born in 1695 and lived for a time in Northern Ireland before moving to Pennsylvania, where he died in 1781. James married his first wife, Margaretta, in Scotland and arrived in Pennsylvania in about 1722, according to Lorene Kelton Petersen in her book, My People--The Keltons. James appears on the county tax rolls as early as 1725.[2] The 1925 genealogy book lists James' second wife as Mary Hackett. A great grandson of James and Mary was John Cunningham Kelton (1828-1893), who was brigadier general during the Civil War and later adjutant general of the Army.[3]
