Questions can be addressed to Ed Kelton. They will be added to this page and others can comment if they relevant information also. Kelton, Pa., and Family I just read some info on your website about the Kelton family. My grandmother was Martha Ellen Kelton, who married James P. Evans and they lived in Oxford, Pa. I visited the town (?) of Kelton last year. It is a crossroads with a small one room post office (I took pictures, but it turned out the camera was broken so nothing came out). Near the post office was an abandoned RR platform--the postmistress told me that Kelton was named for a Robert Kelton who was station master there--don't know when. Anyway, Martha Ellen Kelton's mother was a Martha Nelson--about whom I know nothing. If you have any information about this Kelton family, I would appreciate hearing from you. Many thanks. Betty (4/7/03) Betty--Perhaps the Robert Kelton mentioned is the Robert Kelton, who moved his family to North Carolina in 1788. But your relatives are probably from another Kelton branch, perhaps descendants of Fernando Cortez Kelton of Columbus, Ohio. Can anyone help?--Ed Kelton Am I Related? Am I related to
Fernando Cortez Kelton? Do you have any information about how a Spanish
name ariived in the Kelton lineage? Thank you. Stephen--You are
distantly related to Fernando Cortez Kelton--your family and his are descended
from Thomas Kelton, but you are not descended from him. I hope we learn
how the Spanish name crept into the family. But so far, no luck.--Ed Kelton Fernando Cortez [Last Name Here]? Can You Help? Hi, After doing numerous amounts of research on our family, not only to sum up the lineage, but to discover the stories of why things happened in our heritage, I am perplexed on one subject: Why was the name Fernando Cortez so popular in the early to mid 1800s. My family lineage has, as well as so many other's have, a Fernando Cortez randomly named with so many James, Joseph, William and Jacobs at that time. Knowing of the romanticized Spanish hero/conqueror in the early 1500s does not explain the mass use of naming your child Fernando Cortez in the early-mid 1800. So many families did, especially in the Midwest to East. There was a Lawyer and also, a strong republican figure, Fernando Cortez Beaman, at the time, but I don't warrant that as strong enough. If you have any insight as to why there was a surge of use of this name, especially by German, English, etc. and political deciding families, I would love any information. Was it driven politically, by war or deciding on which party or government to stand by at a changing time? My exhaustive search has taken me nowhere and I am now asking anyone who has a history of a Fernando Cortez during this time period. Mind you, I am not prejudice, just wanting to know the passion behind the naming behind their children. The passions and dreams of our forefathers are instilled in us today. Thank you kindly in advance, Jamie S. (4/3/03) Dear Jamie, Obviously you ask this question because of Fernando Cortez Kelton, 1812-1866, a successful and respected business man in Columbus, Ohio, who built what is now the Kelton House & Garden. I have wondered the same thing for a long time. He pops up in the middle of the tree (there is a later Frank Cortez Kelton) and that is the only one with which such an unusual name. Can anyone help? Ed Kelton Not Kelton Kelton! hi... Kelton Busby (3/28/03) Elijah Collard What kind of information do you have on Elijah Collard. Im wondering if I am related to this Elijah Collard. My Gr. Gr. Grandfather was Elijah Collard, but Im not sure if he is the same one you are talking about in the bio. Please let me know, Thanks, Linda Collard. (3/15/03) Linda -- My Elijah Collard was Elijah Simmons Collard, who was born Nov. 9, 1778 in Washington County, Maryland and died in March 13, 1846 in Walker County, Texas, according to the information I have collected. He was the second of 12 children of Joseph Collard and Mary Kennedy. Elijah Collard married Mary Stark in 1801 in Bullitt County, Kentucky, and had 11 children, born in Kentucky and Missouri.--Ed Kelton John Tolbert I am interested to know any information you have on John Tolbert. What was his background, nationality, parents, what impact did he make on society. Thank you for any help you can give. -- Rev. Christopher Wade (3/10/03) Christopher -- About all I know about John Tolbert is that he was probably born in 1790 in Illinois and died in 1838 in Montgomery County, Texas. He and Margaret Collard (oldest child of Elijah Collard--above) were married about 1818 in Missouri. They had seven children. See the story of related families to the Keltons for more information.--Ed Kelton Australian Keltons My name is Amber Kelton. I'm from one of the Kelton families that are in Australia, I am from the linage of David and Agnes' son Herald. I am trying to trace before John Kelton and Catherine Lindsay came out to Australia. I am interested to know if John had any other siblings and the history of his parents and Catherine's parents. Do you know where this information may be available. (3/8/03) I am sorry that I don't have any information available. There is very little information in Scotland, though you might do a little research at your local Family History Library (Mormon Church), which may have a rather large collection of Scottish Church records that might be of some help to you. You can also order additional records from Salt Lake City if you find something that leads you elsewhere. Good luck.--Ed Kelton
Kelton Tartan? My name is Joshua Edward Kelton. I live in CA and am an 18 year old college student. I was wondering if you knew, or could find out, what the Kelton family tartan is. (2/14/03) The Kelton family is apparently a Lowlander Scots family from southern Scotland. Tartans were a tradition among the clans of the Highlands (and northern Scotland). So there is no record of Keltons among the families with tartans. I personally decided to choose a clan and a tartan to align myself with. I chose the Douglas tartan because the Parish of Kelton is near Castle Douglas and ancient Douglas lands near Dumfries in Scotland. I don't know if that helps or not. I remember asking this question in a "Scottish Tartan Center" somewhere in northern Scotland and having the person behind the counter turn up their nose as though I might be English or something since my name was not listed in their official book.--Ed Kelton Kelton Avenue in LA I happen to live on Kelton Ave. We are quickly trying to find out a little more about the history of the street. Apparently, someone named Louis Kelton donated quite a bit of land to an investment company, a real estate developer that developed Westwood Hills (around UCLA in West L.A.) in the 1920s. Of particular note are the beautiful houses that are in danger of being demolished by a developer on this street. I was wondering if you happen to know: 1. Where I can get maps of 1920s Westwood Hills, particularly Kelton Ave. and the surrounding area. 2. If you had more information about the homes' architests on this street 3. If you had a little bit of information on either Louis Kelton or the street that was named after him, and any other info.--Ken (2/8/03) I have forwarded your message to a friend who has researched the California Keltons -- I am from Texas and can't be of much help to you. I am sorry. Good luck in your quest!--Ed Kelton Follow up: The following is
all I have on any Louis Kelton from my Kelton data base: James Kelton I would be interested in listed on the page and finding any additional information that anyone has on James Kelton and his line.--Jim Kraftchak (1/19/03) Tennessee Keltons My name is Roger Kelton, son of Charles Kelton. My father was born in Murfreesboro Tennessee, and has a bible which shows William Kelton as his great great grandfather. My father is 88 years old and is still living in Nashville Tennessee. I would love to share what information I have with you, along with stories and church information. -- Roger D Kelton (12/20/02) |
